Harnessing the Energies of Love

Part 1. A New Sphere of Love.
One hundred years ago, Teilhard identified and named the noosphere, asserting that with the advent of humanity, people began creating a new layer of thought that eventually covered planet Earth. The most recent previous layer was the biosphere, the layer of life that covered Earth. The noosphere, Teilhard said, possessed emergent properties and abilities that the biosphere by itself did not possess, and therefore deserved to be recognized for itself. Teilhard also predicted, but never named, a new layer beyond the noosphere, a layer of love. Identifying and naming this new sphere is essential to harnessing the energies of love.
Part 2. Axioms of Love
In his scientific book The Human Phenomenon, Teilhard traced the universe's history in detail, searching for consistent patterns in its evolutionary stages from inert subatomic particles released at the Big Bang through eons of time to today's human brain. His discoveries of these patterns are so surprising that, to grasp them, requires a total scientific mindset shift, a metanoia. From his research and study, Teilhard formulated a series of principles of evolution that I have called axioms of love.
Part 3. Bonds of Love
Teilhard also discovered that the most fundamental force at work in the universe was Attraction, specifically, Attraction leading to Connection (or union in French). This fundamental force has never stopped functioning. He also noticed that new Connections are attracted to other Connections, generating a new level of growth in Complexity. As this growing Complexity became neurological, it emerged as Consciousness. In this presentation I want to focus on Connections (or Unions) and Teilhard's most powerful discovery that "Union Differentiates." The many different bonds of human love, friendship, and teamwork continue to generate new forms of life and energy and, in turn, challenge each member of a union to develop new abilities and capacities, especially of loving-kindness, compassion, welcome, forgiveness, joy, and creativity.
Part 4. Choices for Love
Combining his discoveries of the axioms of love and the laws of evolution, Teilhard was able to sketch some ethical principles that would foster the evolution of love and offer some general perspectives for our conscious choices and behaviors as individuals and groups. Many traditional ethical principles are no longer useful, since they were based on a fixed and unchanging universe, with a limited amount of available energy from material resources. Love, on the contrary, remains a continuous source of unlimited energy, a source of energy we have yet to learn to harness.¸
Louis M. Savary, PhD, STD, holds one doctorate in mathematical statistics applied to the behavioral science and a second in theology and spirituality. For twenty years, he served as senior trainer and writer for Educational systems for the Future. He was a Jesuit for thirty years and has studied, taught and written about Teilhard for the past forty years. Among his many books are Teilhard de Chardin on Morality, Teilhard de Chardin on Love, and The Human Phenomenon Explained. He is a board member of the American Teilhard Association.
