LEARN MORE BELOW

The Earth Charter was created by the independent Earth Charter Commission, which was convened as a follow-up to the 1992 Earth Summit in order to produce a global consensus statement of values and principles for a sustainable future. The document was developed over nearly a decade through an extensive process of international consultation, to which over five thousand people contributed. The Charter has been formally endorsed by thousands of organizations, including UNESCO and the IUCN (World Conservation Union). For more information, please visit www.EarthCharter.org.

Emergence and Convergence in Teilhard de Chardin’s:

The Human Phenomenon

With Margaret Walters

Margaret Walters

Written in 1938, during a time of great conflict, The Human Phenomenon by visionary, paleontologist, and geologist Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, is his book of the Earth – an epic journey which tracks the growth of complexity and consciousness to release what he called the ‘spirit of the Earth.’ Teilhard guides his readers back in space–time to experience the birth of our planet, the emergence of life and consciousness, the beginning of human thought and socialization, and the unique mode of human unfolding as humanity covers the whole planet in an entirely new membrane, the Noosphere. In this two part series, we will explore the major patterns of emergence and convergence in Teilhard’s masterwork and discuss its relevance to our own times.

Margaret Walters is the author of The Cosmic Pilgrim, (2010, Wipf & Stock, Eugene, Oregon) which is a spiritual exploration of the new story of science and religion through journeying with Teilhard de Chardin, Thomas Berry and Brian Swimme. Margaret started her career as a teacher but then moved to retreat work, parish ministry, and spiritual direction. In July 2018 Margaret completed an MA in Theological Studies. She is currently contributing to program development for Programs in Earth Literacies.
